Holistic beauty takes into consideration the whole person - body and mind when it comes to skin care, beauty products and cosmetics. Holistic beauty involves natural skin care, organic products that are devoid of synthetic chemicals. Natural skin care and natural cosmetics are made from ingredients currently existing in nature, such as crushed minerals, fruits, berries, flowers, herbs and essential oils. People today are becoming more aware and concerned about what they put into their bodies and on their skin. Therefore, natural beauty products are no longer a small segment of the industry, but becoming more mainstream. Aside from color additives, cosmetics and their ingredients are not subject to FDA regulation prior to their release into the market. It is only when a product is found to violate the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) and Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA) after its release, that the FDA may start investigating. With many new products released into the market every season, it is hard to keep track of the safety of every product. As an alternative, many people turn to natural beauty products and natural cosmetics. Some are easily made at home from natural ingredients, and many more companies are coming out with "all natural" and "organic" products. All natural products generally contain mineral and plant ingredients and organic products are made with organic agricultural products. Note: beauty products that claim they are organic must be certified "USDA Organic” - otherwise they are not.

Essential oils also are used in natural beauty products and natural skin care products. Essential oils are concentrated hydrophobic liquids containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. An oil is “essential” because it carries a distinctive scent, or essence, of the plant. Many essential oils have medicinal properties as well as cosmetic properties. They have been used since ancient times: the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans used them in cosmetics, perfumes, and drugs. Certain essential oils also have an uplifting effect on the mind. They are probably most often associated with aromatherapy (inhaled,) but they can also be massaged into the skin and used in various natural beauty products. One of the most commonly used oils in beauty products is rose oil, produced from the petals of roses.

The natural and organic cosmetics and beauty market continues to rise in the United States and Europe. In an effort to improve sales, manufacturers have taken note of a growing consumer interest in holistic beauty. Experts predict that the natural/organic skin care, hair care and color cosmetics markets will continue to grow in the next decade and beyond.
